I'll Be Gone The horizon gathers together, and the foundations of this megalopolis descend into the meat of terra firma. Alongside me you drowse, the crook of your arm curves across my hip— your hand a firm heaviness, like that of the comforter, touching my back. Afterward, when I turn from you, the way wet weather unexpectedly turns and falls back... it is merely to restrain the innocence of youth, which risks dwindling, when shielded beneath you. The inner city has moored itself onto these shoals. It tugs against divestiture, the tide of our moving away from one another. Now that I'm grown, I trounce lids from jars with weighty blades. I smash dimples into their brims, and when they wrench free, I'm gladdened. When I was a child, my father employed jars, so that I could play vanquisher. When he would endeavor to open them, his brawny forearms would swell; his face would turn the color of an overripe tomato, but to no fruition. I would just laugh, and when he'd hand the jar to me I'd twist it open with insignificant effort, and accept it, when he’d say, that without me he'd have never gotten it open. When my parents fell away from endearments, my mom ceased purchasing those jars, the ones I could just spin open. Now I cudgel and thrash lids from containers. I've beheld others battering their jars open, and I yearn for the days when I spun lids free. Our child will never twist open a jar... and the dents in their caps will always be seen. Tomorrow, when you arise... I'll be gone. |

"The horizon gathers together, and the foundations of this megalopolis descend into the meat of terra firma." What an opening line, it grabbed me in an instant. And what a sad and beautiful poem, reminded me of Lou Reed's lyrics in the way it was written. Hope you're ok. Yours truly ~Broken~ "Base not your joy upon the deeds of others, for what is given can be taken away." |

*points, nodding at frog* What he said! Loved this. The soul would have no rainbows, had the eyes no tears. |
