Maddie Mei Mei Nyguen Nyguen Lien Fan will turn five this Sunday in her green velvet dress and Mary Janes she will address us perfectly first in Mandarin then in English Beloved Grandmothers, Grandfather and Parents in my fifth year I read and write both Mandarin and English I do simple sums ballet teacher says my grande jetes’ and plies’ are perfection violin teacher is pleased with my sonatinas tennis instructor says my serve is outstanding. I hope I have pleased you her father will stand with his hand on his wife’s shoulder while she looks modestly into her lap we will all smile as the Source of True Light finishes her speech we Grandmothers our brows furrowed will mutter softly hu hu hu perhaps this silly fish will bring honor to her ancestors yet we will sing to her as she blows out candles and when Chuck E. Cheese enters the room Maddie Mei Mei Nyguen Nyguen Lien Fan will squeal in mock fear and hide behind her father’s leg giggling |
