Dear 2006,

I ask of you, 2006, what fate you have in store
Of catastrophic incidents, of love, of hate, of war?
What novel  treats will you endow to lace our days with spice?
What will we pay for such delights? What blood? What stress? What price?

Will you continue to consume the simple joys of life?
The laughter shared by brothers and between a man and wife?
The games we played together and the meals we shared as one?
The pride a plump tomato wrought beneath the summer sun?

Will you engorge our media with filth to bathe our youth?
Or will you have our children spun of fibers made of truth?
Will people fix their visions on the screen of no return
Or toward the fate of salmon and the forests that we burn?

Is it the selfish conquests that our emptiness will seek?
Then let the quakes and tempests and the Mississippi speak!
Then let the silent voices from a West Virginia mine
Remind us of humility and simple peace of mind

I ask, Year of Uncertainty, Millennium’s Restless Son,
Will you renew our cities and undo what has been done?
Will you continue to erode the values we possess?
Take Christmas out of Christmas and the wild from wilderness?

I ask these questions, for I cannot see a ray of hope
As privacy and dignity slip down the fatal slope
I beg of you 2006, a hint of what’s to come
Will you march ever onward to a rapping funeral drum?

The breezes chuckle quietly, the ocean laps a lilt
The planet shrugs its shoulders and displays a puzzled tilt
The New Year sighs, “This Eden is the fruit of YOUR OWN DEEDS
For I am only time and do not plant the future seeds”

You are a remarkable writer, Elizabeth.  This are questions asked in perfect timing and rhyme.  Absoluely great.  I'm sharing this one, you better believe.  My favorite part?

...take the Christmas out of Christmas
and Wild out of Wilderness...

Love that.

Lady Santos...

My one New Year's Resolution:

Multiply and share the good, the smile, the love.

Maybe it won't fix much...

but whoever the recipient might be, might be appreciative.

m'friend.
