Folks, I'm goin' down to St. James Infirmary,
See my baby there;
She's stretched out on a long, white table,
She's so sweet, so cold, so fair.

    ~ Cab Calloway\Traditional

in the 6th parish

the children of Lafitte

salute

five fingers on one hand

middle finger on the other

they are like any other children

but different

little girls on stoops

legs splayed

dresses way over their knees

smiles that make you want to cry

      whatcha doin’ sweet thing?

none yo business

little boys

freestyling

to anything they can catch

  who that with you sonny?

this my li’l partner

  ya’ll stay outa trouble, hear?

ain’t studying no trouble

we cool

still they salute

five fingers on one hand

middle finger on the other

children in Lafitte

don’t snitch

don’t rat out

they let the people know they in the house

still

children in Lafitte sometimes

lie on a long, white table

I like how you captured the attitude of the
children.   Such sad experiences

Hey Lady--you from 'round here?

I've been working on one for St. Bernard as I find the name of that forgotten parish ironically significant.

Lafitte was beautiful once, and yanno? All those big mansions never looked right in a little fishing village to me. It'll be beautiful again, though it may take two decades for the palmetto forest to recover.

(You did the colloquialisms quite well too.)

I enjoyed the read, but like you, I prefer to see the children of Lafitte with their cane poles and those corks bobbin' from da crab nets.

Hope to read more from you.

Chilling scenes you have captured so well.
Wonderfully written.

Thank you all very much.

Sorry serenity... been there but not from around there. Been on my mind for a while though. I am waiting to read your new St. Bernard poem.
