when I see you are hurting, I want to cradle you in my arms, but sense that you need the space to hurt alone and so I stand back, three steps to the side of you as if I were near a wild thing... no direct eye contact, for that is an invasion of your space never mind that my mind wishes to invade such space, but my heart holds me back, thank goodness and I wait for you to come to me and ask for the hug |

SusieQ, some people require more space than others. My job puts me into that needs-extra-space-arena, and even when I sometimes feel someone needs or wants a hug, I must wait until s(he)makes the first move. |

thanks for these replies! grinning at your reply, majnu, thanks and Susan? me too, but I work with developmentally disabled adults, and it's considered 'abusive' and a violation of their rights/personal space to hug them without their permission, so I've had to learn their cues as to where and when (or when not) to touch them |
