Regretfully I must report A sad year in the world of sports. Floridians, who love their games Have watched their teams go down in flames.
FSU? Guess what? They're through The Hurricanes and Gators, too. These college football juggernauts Have left our stomachs tied in knots.
The newly-vamped Miami Heat Have experts saying, "can't be beat" I would be more apt to agree If they could score a victory.
There was a time they were our darlin's And everybody loved the Marlins But Wayne played butcher boy again And they ain't done a thing since then.
The Panthers? They can't even skate! The way they play is second-rate. They are the team that I would like Much better if they stayed on strike!
These sports, it seems, are not designed For our true skills - we need to find Some other things where we excel In things that we do very well.
Putting shutters up in seconds flat. We sure as hell excel in that. Detroit, Chicago - let's see you Nail plywood sheets the way we do.
Getting through those 4-ways stops No lights, no signs, no rules, no cops. Dodging roof tiles and debris Arriving home in victory.
Gimmee that first-place trophy, please For chopping down and hauling trees. Gold cups for patience? Those are mine For standing in the FEMA line.
No one is better than I am At eating all those pounds of Spam. Someone should give a ring to me For life without electricity.
Baseball? Football? That's for wimps Activities for steroid chimps. In the real games that we all play Florida blows them all away!

laughing here...and you know I know.
and not to make light of a grievous situation, but my first sight of our superdome, was "Thar ya go, Mr. Benson. You finally got the stadium worthy of your team."
*Geaux Tigers*
and chuckling, wait until the nice FEMA people come to interview you. I suggested he sit under the split ceiling...
gawd I love ya Mike.
Happy Thanksgiving from a grateful n'awlins witch.

LOL, what a wonderful way to let off some steam Michael. I'll bet everyone in Florida would applaud this! One of the reason's I love ya, is the marvelous twists to your poems ... this was no exception ... wonderful! Love that creative mind of yours!

I suggest we change the license plates from 'The Sunshine State' to the 'Plywood State'....sigh.
Enjoyed your poem (and I won't tell my daughter and her hubbie that you dissed the Gators - even though they suck this year).
I think sometimes it's easier dealing with things when you have a writers perspective - you took life's exasperations and made them 'smile worthy'. Good job!

Sunshine...Sy? Dance? That's how he walks!
martyjo....I'm with you! Thanksgiving is COWBOY day!!
Mysteria...you nailed it! Same to you up there!!
Ethel...I wish you a wonderful day, too. You are special..
Jeremiah..Jaguars get my vote, too. We have no other football team in Florida that can play the game!
serenity gal....love the stadium comment! Hey, we gotta laugh, right? One of the things I'm thankful for is that YOU are safe and...well, let's not push it. We love ya the way you are!
May not be easy for some to find a lot to be thankful for this year but we play the hand we're dealt and you're aces with me...
Kit...one of the perks in being a poet is that we can find a poem in everything. Wonderful to see your words and please do me a favor. Send one of your high school hockey teams down here to play the Florida Panthers...they need a victory! hmmm....come to think of it, they might not beat 'em! Best to you....
Poet deVine....I always say that my favorite team is whoever is playing the Gators! Unfortunately my Hurricanes are bums, too. They are 8-2, ranked 10th in the nation and we're disgusted with them...think we are spoiled down here? Happy Thanksgiving up there........
Maureen..for not being a sports enthusiast you are always a good one. You are a pleasure to know and I wish you the very best on this day...and all days

I love this... and I know it's no consolation to Floridians that they're not the only ones familiar with the drill (and the hammers, saws and tape *G*)
But... as serenity said and I can't help but ditto *G*....

I can't believe I let this one pass me by. As always, there's no stopping you when it comes to light verse. You had me laughing embarassingly often while reading this in my school library.
It really is true, though, isn't it? Sports just don't reflect what we're good at.
Thanks for the chuckles.

Brilliantly humorous -
You are RIGHT at that, my friend. This was quite a pleasure to write. Not into football at all, but hurricanes - that's another story! This is a keeper!
