Doo, Doo, Doo, Shootin' Out My Back Door

Peace is cheap.
I buy it by the quart at Big Lots,
Or rent some in the corner
Of the video store.
It’s war that costs, and I don’t buy.
I shot a spider last month,
In memory of a girl who had to eat one,
And for my father of course,
But that’s all, not a fetish: some war.

Corks are good but they break.
Still it’s fun to watch one
Grasshopper across the yard,
Check the little calibers of it spitting
Off in random directions
As it tries to dance out of range.
The trick is not to shatter it,
not all at once, only tease and tease.

Today a hummingbird stopped,
Dangling exactly there
As if it needed to understand.
I held as it hummed the sharps and flats
Of its rhythmless seeking,
Held while it flared down to plunder
The red foxglove, and was gone;
All the while it looked like a green cork
Caught suspended in mid-jump.

Tomorrow and tomorrow I’ll do the same;
More sound, less fury, isn’t that the way?
Bother me then if you must;
Today I’m not at home.
Peace is cheap.

I found this to be a very interesting write. I'm not quiet sure what it all means but I did enjoy reading it. I always have liked poetry that makes me think. Great write, lots of luck,

Ed

I wish peace for you, but not sure how cheap it is.  Your poem had a kind of zanny I don't care attitude..perhaps there is some peace in that.

the thoughts I brought with me
when I came to read tonight
were suspended by this...
(just like the little hummer)
I do understand, in my own way,
that Peace resides in accepting
each tiny moment
of Life

Loved the line about buying peace at big lots. Peace is cheap..its everything else that costs us so much. Great write
I would like to know what aisle peace is on though

Ed...

I sense the bouncing off of
idiotic walls with this piece
of peace...

It could be very cheap, yes...
yet...I think you're equating to the fact
that war has cheapened the price of peace...

and even a penny couldn't buy your thoughts now...

and thank you....

Ed, this is like skipping stones. You never know where they will end and you can't see the damage done beneath the surface. Very comprehensive write, very profound musing. But please don't be this down.

Here in the midst of my lonely abyss, a single joy I find...your presence in my mind.  Unknown

hey rhythm ratman
I forgot to tell you in my first reply
how much I enjoyed your word-tweak on
Fogerty/Credence, 'Lookin out my back door' tune (early 70's?). Remember this line?

"bother me tomorrow, today I'll find no sorrows"

hugs, happy Saturday

Yep, and Shakespeare's probably rollin' in his grave over my blending of that and his "tomorrow and tomorrow....."

This poem was fun to write!

I saw this the other day Ed, and wanted to reply but got busy. I knew I had to get back to this.

Yanno whats funny?  I was just singing that song in my head the same morning that I saw your title.

I enjoyed your write.

I like this on so many levels... one being the ping-pong effect you achieve... for isn't any real peace just that hard to predict, teasing us before skipping across the lawn/world?

If I had to create a label for this work, it would be delectably disquieting... and darned superb! *S*
