She wore a little ruffled bib--
blue eye frost creased every line--
she dropped a menu in my face,
tacky with the grease of time.

Water, with three cubes of ice
and body of one dead green fly--
All of this beyond belief
Still, I'm not the least surprised.

"Look," I said, "It's not quite noon.
But still, I'd like a pint of ale."
From where I sat I smelled saloon.
Somehow her pale skin paled.

"Ah just cain't serve beer in here,
but I tell you whut...
Behind that door?
You'll find a floor
that needs some sweepin' up."

I followed glance and trail of ash
to a backstreet door.
She smiled with eyes in wink of sly:
"It's watchyer lookin' for."

"Thank you," I said with a smile.
"Don't thank me. Just hand me five."
I blinked and asked, "A five for tip?"
She said, "Nope. It's five for sip."

All my logic still prevailed,
protesting, "I've not drank of ale."
"It's for the water that you drank."
I looked at glass and my heart sank...

The glass was empty--almost dry--
but for three cubes and no dead fly.

I got it Karen!  Took a lot of hairspray, but I got the sucker, LOL!  Cute story, and I had never read this either so thank you.  By the way this smilie was sitting with dust on it, and I finally got to use it again, as it's yours!
