Left alone to fend for herself, she waited silently in the garden, like yesterday’s faded bloom. The leaves turned brown too early. October blew in colder than the ides of March, and November brought all forward movement to a screeching halt. Down the lane the dogs bayed restlessly at an icey-blue silvery moon that should have been glowing golden. Three steps more to the left and she would be kneeling at the very spot of his last touch. November always brings chilled thoughts. Even the laughter of the school children in their joyous pre-Christmas mood hurts her ears. Sighing into the winds of fall, she sifts the soil through tired fingertips, memories grounded once again in him. Is there a reason this season feels so strongly of him? |
