I didn't plan on the afternoon
being chinese food words
with a hundred fortune cookies
all saying your name in code
but then you walked in again

like it was the first time
and I didn't know your eyes
or how your mouth pouts
when you are just being lovely
without explanation, freeform

like the sky does some mornings
before the sun has time
to scold for the distraction
and you looked my way
recognition then a proper pause

and I said damn I wish
but no one heard it unless
that was when you smiled
and crossed your arms ladylike
pretending not to notice

we were riding metal mental

and, yanno what? I think she heard to...

"precious and few" is this poem...just like the song.

Now, if you let me know who she is...I'll be happy to nudge her with a "Hey Lady, H e l l o, I think he's liking you" But then, knowing you the way I do, you'll surely be able to get that across to her, without any guessing games" hehe

the fortune fell
on the floor
between them,
her lips pursed with intent
as she licked her finger
to gather the cookie crumbs
first, from the table,
then from her lap;
letting their sweetness dissolve
like the unspoken words
between them.
