"No pain, no gain," is what I've heard. I guess that may be true. But what has been my profit, dear- For the pain of loving you? You are not to blame, I must confess. The fault is all with me. I am the one who called the tune, For a dance that could not be. You took the bait, the tender words, Responded very well... Until the tawdry truth of life, I finally had to tell. And now the flames we may have felt- Become a burning pain. And embers, cold, so silent, dead- Are all that now remain. "I love you." Let me say it once- I say it all the time, Especially on the lonely nights, I'm wishing you were mine. "Farewell." I've said it more than once- And meant it, with each saying... And yet into forbidden realms, My heart is always straying. "Good night." Well, maybe that is safe- Although I rather doubt it. "Hello, my love," I'd rather say... E'en from the rooftops shout it. |
