Mumsy’s Autumn Day

She woke up in the morning
saw the sun was going to shine
donned her boots and orange goggles
“this autumn day is mine”

chop chop chop out came the hatchet
as she hacked at thick old stems
of moldy blue hydrangea
and she offered no amends

as she scalped off all the roses
from the bush, with some old saw
and yanked up all the daisies
with a stick that had a claw

oops, pressure washed the preacher
when he stopped by for a chat
she was so rattled when he left
she weed whacked Vern’s old cat

the neighbor thinks she’s charming
“that little lady’s sweet”
but she threw her trash bags in his truck
as he drove down the street

finally she surveyed her work
a wind blew from the east
and formed a cloud of dry leaves
from the neighbor’s dogwood tree

they clattered down the sidewalk
and danced madly in the grass
she stood there in the middle
waved her arms and laughed and laughed

the wind was warm and wild
and she curtsied to one knee
“thanks for the ovation,
mother nature, just for me”
