Of Families and Gatherings We gather only occasionally now, over wedding feast tables, holidays at the beach house and wakes at St. Brigid’s. We’re more careful these days about what we pour into our cups – hurt confesses itself too easily over purple-lipped crystal; we're more conscious, too of those of us poisoned by drink. We blame it on the heritage; it claims our men. Over bread and fish, we re-hash stories meant to embarrass – the laughter is dry, the sixth course. A fight, inevitably, develops; ends in hugs and sorries. Today we speak of trusts: how the women seem to go too soon, and by the way, asks Mother daughter, when will you be finding God? Corinne I loved the subtle questioning of your mom, "oh, by the way....." That part in my opinion gave the color to the whole poem. Yes, that is the way family gatherings are. Enjoyed! |

Corinne... You slice life well. The burden is to take the slice, dip it in oil, and water, and feed the masses. You do this well, too. Someday? I hope to gain YOUR insight.... and write as well as you do. Thank you, for this. |

Corinne, you have come back with a vividly, realistic slice-of-life portrayal ~ and you are a master of doing that! I felt the sadness and resignation in your words ~ and your mother's. God bless you and your whole family, Linda |

Corinne, that's exactly how family gatherings are...the longer together the soft memories change to differences of opinions, arguments ( often due to imbibing)and then the "sorries" as you say. One often wonders if they are worth the effort. Nice to read you again. hugs M |
