If you’ve never been to Bali, Perhaps you know the song They sang in South Pacific In another war-time zone. Bali Hai may call you, The song of gentle wind, Weather’s always balmy and the Island is your friend. Though I’ve not been to Bali, I know the people there. Their gentleness and kindness A breath of Heaven’s air. The Island full of beauty, Green hillsides full of dreams, Where beaches met in blue skies And the harmony, serene. The music in the movie Alluded paradise. Tonight I hear there's been another Bombing. Now, that’s twice. How can they say that what they want Is paradise, the tree of life And then go into restaurants Exploding hatred, making strife? Jihadists bombing Shangri-la, The Eden here on earth, What is the point they try to make Trading heaven for their “truth?” [This message has been edited by iliana (10-02-2005 07:40 AM).] |

jo, a very well-written poem illustrating the contrasting concepts of war and peace. "South Pacific" is one of my all-time favourite musicals and the hauntingly beautiful song "Bali Hai", has stayed with me always. It sounds like a modern-day Shangri-la. How sad that evil has to infiltrate a place of such peace and beauty. I knew you had a poem in you last evening that was bursting to get out! ~ and wow! This is very impressive! Yes I am saddened to hear what has happened once again to that beautiful island , I have been there and most Australians go there for holidays because its only a 3 hour flight from Western Ausralia , many Australians were killed last time those bombs went off Hope |

Jo....I read about this in the paper this morning and was saddened. I have not been to Bali, but did love the movie and music of South Pacific. Thank you for writing this poem. |

Thoughts of terrorist bombs are everywhere; none can understand them. It is so sad. Thank you, Jo, for reminding us. Ken Through rubble and trouble and dark of night |

Beauty is indeed a veneer. It sometimes just covers up the evil lying in wait. believe in what your heart feels... |

The last out-post of the paradise that once we called earth. When will we ever learn? Beautiful iliana |

Ah, but it is not the good people of Bali, but a small number of extremist that ruin a paradise...James |

In some poetic intercourse, even wearing a conundrum can't keep you from becoming poignant.... This is a question which, if we could answer it at all, would become its own question -- "Ok, now we know why, but why do they think that?? ....and what do we do about it?" ~~(¸¸¸¸ºº> ~~(¸¸¸¸ºº> ~~(¸¸ ¸¸ºº> ~~~(¸¸ER¸¸ºº> |

Hi, Jo - seems I missed this before. Living in South Africa has the sad side effect of making one numb or, as someone said to me the other day, too dead. To be "too dead" (if such a thing is possible) is perhaps how a lot of people feel when helpless to effect meaningful change in their own and others lives. Good write - oh, from one not yet too dead. |
