On this last full day of Summer
I have time to realize
I would loosen each tight sandal,
wash your weary feet,
lift your sack of karmic bricks
and offer simple treats;

at end of day on this long and dusty trail,
while knowing in my soul it’s best
to keep my troubles to myself,
I miss the chance to entertain you,
share my latest tricks,
warm oil soothe those muscles tense,
hold you until you close your eyes
without need for recompense;

though Autumn rises for us both
I can not fail to miss your smile,
the touch and pleasant scents
of honest sun warmed skin;

in these years of separation,
without promise as a prize,
I endure here in the open
sure in my heart there lies a place
of quiet memory,
somewhere,
inside your scarred and battle hardened shell.

Oh, my goodness. Such a touching and melancholy write! This brought tears to my eyes. So, I will place it gently into my library to read again and again.
