In the likeness of man I follow the trails
through the beautiful forests and glens
but the earth no comforter, friend,
when its power ascends through the feet
and leaves through a hole in the heart.

Retention, retention, but I cannot keep
those flames from an underground fire
when a mind refuses to canopy heart
with the light of essential true love.

Like air that I breathe in/out it goes
through holes called “heartbreak” and “ache”
named just so to make it known
that I, in the likeness of man,
have delayed my e.t.a.
at the start of a future life.

One day long ago till today
the power of you joined essential love, me,
to the underground fires of earth
and left me a woman “un-cool”
on my walk in the likeness of man …
and that’s not okay because they say,
“If you can’t take the heat, get out”
and I cannot leave not yet, not yet,
when heartbreak a rock on the road
for new and untried spirit feet.

Feet, feet; I’m no circus freak
to walk when befitted to fly
but, oh, so-so, believe it or not,
it’s still a matter unknown
on this walk in the likeness of man!

Well, Martie, I do believe you're right. The sky's a great place to be but (sigh) life does insist that we have our feet on the ground - for now.
