Moved from a shack to a barn

0 posted 2005-09-04 01:53 PM

I rarely dream

Or rarely remember them

But since I learned my shack was up for sale
I’ve been beset

In one
The shack was on fire
The woodstove was lit
As well as the firewood beside it
The several small stacks of wood
In every corner, also alight
Was the signal that told me I dreamt
And yet, I thought it prudent
To pour a pail of water on each
Then, watch for a bit, before waking up

In another
The shack was crowded
Filled to overflowing with rows of new owners
A slick and well dressed murder of crows
Arguing, pecking over what to do with it
Black men dressed in their Sunday-go-to-meeting
Dark jackets, roomy trousers, bowlers and boaters
All of them wearing straight thin ties,
Black exclamations against starched white shirts

And one
In which the poor shack was bedeviled
Overrun by the most unlikely machinery
Safety yellow monsters in unpitying moods
Carving the scenery into unlikable faces
Moving boulder and stone with uncanny ease
Stacking trees into complex, unsolvable puzzles

But before those, and before the news

I had another lucid dream, a foreshadowing
Where my shack was larger, to accommodate a crowd
And painted with graffiti evoking a carnival

I had just asked a woman if she thought I should repaint
Covering the reds, blues and greens of mid-way art
With my own striped and swirled colors edged with gilt

But, the party was winding down
The guests were busy folding their clever camp furniture
And stowing it into gray limos waiting by the river

A library desk floated by

As long and narrow as a Polynesian dugout
Women and children, some reading, some writing
Some manning paddles, were seated ten to a side

Seeing sister and her two daughters were part of this “crew”
I stepped aboard this odd boat to go along for a while
And hop ashore before the walk home became too far

But too soon, we picked up speed heading into a blind turn
Leaving my companions little time for reading
In their attempt to slow and steer our hurtling craft

Their leaf-bladed paddles brought us safe through the curve
To a straightening, where we could see downstream
A logjam of desks, some larger, most smaller

But all trying to make their way through the same narrow
And this, though already farther away than I wanted to be
Is where I decided to start the journey back home

"Black exclamations against starched white shirts"
only you could see a tie in this way
what a write, I loved the journey
and even a refugee could see beyond SELF, when the view is seen through your eyes, Ed

Ok, so if this is true, and not just poetic? Let us in on your NEXT dream ASAP.

Excellent writing, Ed. But from you, I always get the very best.

Ed...I would like to book passage on that library boat, if it would slow down long enough to pick me up.  It is obvious how much love you have for that shack of yours.  It is sad to leave something you love.

Am I selfish enough to hope such dreams continue? Or friend enough to wish you respite from upheaval? Or both? *S*

Change... especially major changes... usually brings forth from me something closely resembling a hissy fit/temper tantrum. *S* Your way is MUCH better! *S*

This is superb! *S*

and your sister with her two wonderful daughters will help you find a way through that narrow path, without question.

Yanno, I credit myself with having some pretty bizarre dreams but that was top shelf stuff Ed...

(I think the shack's trying to tell you to stay)

I always seem to dream about what worries me and always if I speak to someone on the phone right before I sleep I dream of them..

I like how you dream so much better.

Geez, I woke up thinking about you and the shack!  I am waiting to hear if I got a place I bid on to move to, and in my dream I was decorating it already, seriously!  I haven't heard and already I am 1/4 packed I am hoping I guess positive thinking will produce positive results - who knows.

You - I dare not analyze that dream LOL

the shack does have its hold on you Ed,
but wherever you are, I am sure,
it will be home....
