Aftermath, thirst - hunger- Need: wading in stench: Sobbing woman, pregnant On a side-walk bed Loses fluid, adding color- The pattern, darkening cement As it runs to the gutter; No one holds her hand. Aftermath-shots and shouts- Crops harvested, After growth of disaster- Ricochet echoes-some Hate looters- Looted wal-mart guns In vigilante hands; Different kinds of hate Busting caps- Bullets flying over heads Of mothers stealing water. Aftermath-old choppers- Army leftovers Driven by thin-manned corps Missing their brothers, The other trained saviors Too busy in pipedreams, To tend to this reality- Not enough heroes left at home, To take care of their own. Aftermath-crisis at gas pumps Executives with oily hands Shake the presidents- Job well done!-tax breaks Add to profits- While junkies spike their cars- Tourniquets, around their necks Making steel veins pop- Sending morphine to carbs; While white collar smilers Grin-hidden, popping corks Smoking fat cigars In board rooms---drug lords Of a nation they have Hooked on petroleum. Aftermath- after the storm Midnight, day four: Writing is frustrating, futile- Deploring, yet accepting This whim of nature, That has scarred the spirits- Land, and faces Of my beautiful nation. We can only pray/wish/hope that the strong of spirit will survive... and that the weak? are comforted... It is so hard to know what to say/think/believe... but you and others, ice, got up today to forge ahead... Bless you. Thank you. |

This vivid portrayal of the horrendous aftermath of Katrina's fury, has further brought tears to my eyes ~ and my soul. With your emotive and descriptive writing, you have brought the horror and devastation even closer to this reader. You are a fine writer with a loving and compassionate heart. Linda |

As a nation sworn to protect and defend the people...we have failed miserably in this instance, and must take serious stock of our attitudes and approaches to the way we handle major disasters. I fear this is just the beginning, as nature has been altered forever by our own dirty handling of the world's resources. This is not the end of the problem, just a horrid wakeup call that repeats the message "HOUSTON, we have a problem" |
