The young man stands in the snow; the time is a quarter till seven His black hair melts into the night, His brown eyes search but yet do not seek A Quarter moon beats down on him, looms over him engulfs him He is entranced, magnetic glaring into the woods like a spurned lover We see a pool, a deck perhaps twenty feet to the left Underneath the deck something catches his eye, it twinkles; shines For a moment this object reflects off his glasses, illuminates him, grants him power This could be just a trick; an emotional reflex but we do not have this luxury We watch as he bows his head, and then lifts his head to the cold brisk sky We imagine him deep in thought, and we wish to leave him there but we can not He decides on an action; he begins to move down the slope towards the deck Then abruptly stops less than halfway there, and gets down on his knees He is moved by something, and we draw closer and see tears streak down his face They freeze there; they hang there like an unanswered question We gaze at this from our perch in this high ancient tree This young man on his knees in the fallen snow, The quarter moon beating on his back, the unforgiving brisk air This is his daily ritual, and we are his mute witness, his silent diary Leave us to define him, embrace him in our cold distant way We rush to greet the frigid air with enthusiasm and attention that may outlive us To another tree; to another young man awakening from his first real dream New lovers are nervous and tender, but smash everything. For the heart is an organ of fire |
