Cheering beauty, paper chains tomorrows I pirouette in low voice You…eyewitness to marsh grass, we Steadied ourselves on the handrail of that bridge Smitten with citrus & Disney Loosing ourselves in oils, Of sweet sounding words Will we come of age together? Will our hearts kiss the prettiest rivers? We understand the words, 10th Street spoke Looking into each other’s eyes and smile Remembering Messages in a Bottle How you held me softly close It is our voiceless understanding Our senses navigating to recognize Standing face to face with the moon and ocean Leaf-blown silences of homesickness For those times resurfacing again… Imagine playing right field Imprinting a delicate graffiti of time To be in the arms of our secrets Wishing I could protect you from native whispers Censoring blood history’s childhood Hungering for the realm of pure elation…for you Standing together flirting with windows Knowing the isle of Orion & hormonal frenzy You tell me stories of barrier islands While I lean on the arm of bewilderment “An ancient forest newly underwater”, you say Shifting seaward, we would lean toward the breakers Snorkeling, keeping time to our reasons Counting aloud, the slipping away of last hours In both wildness and innocence We go deeper & deeper into a long season I say, I’m afraid… You smiled finding my voice, handing it to me Like a law unto itself Liberating high tide We had the sense to stay in that house On 10th Street for awhile Illuminated only by headlights of graduation Nodding in agreement Understanding what we didn’t know then… Going from first to third on a double Dancing beneath, battery powered lights Of a full moon You hold me close whispering “Remember me…and Save the Last Dance for Me” My thoughts touch something good and glittering We’ve both created Even if…only for a moment…for awhile Finding your lips pressed against mine You ask…in that silly voice “Can you say…together”? Am I in love with love? |
