Last summer in the City I so loved the summers in the city The sparrow’s song and the bumblebee’s sting Smells of perfume, baby powder and happiness Mothers yelling above the sounds of construction At youngsters who played in waterholes and parks The old men with hankies, wiping away sweat Contemplating moves on checker boards The ice-cream man playing the part of the pied piper Luring young and old alike to buy his tasty treats On the corners were boys with braids spitting game to shy girls And out the apartment windows, daydreamers pondered On the stoops below, young women would gossip And in the gutter around the corner Hidden within the shadows of the sunset I lied on my back gazing at the faint and blurry sun Slowly bleeding and dying from a stab wound……… Marcel |
