To Be with You

Can this be right, that I am

Cradled in the shadow of your mind?

Already I had bid farewell

And of the tenderest kind

And now seek to fill distances

With hunger of my eyes

Here within your shadow

Ever present by your side

I say that all is right with God

If clinging as a child

In total innocence of thought,

Though thoughts run wild.

For only in a shadow’s corner,

Meekly coiled, dwells the soul

And leaves the heart so distant

From the uncompleted whole

I pray that you regard this whim,

This uninvited presence,

Not as a petalled bloom

But only as its essence

And may you in the dawning hour

Within a shadow’s steep

Inhale its pale perfume as you

Quietly awake from sleep

What harm can come from this?

A shadow softly pressed,

(Not even a petal gently laid),

Across the smoothness of your chest

Not even a sound to stir the peace of your repose

But in the white of linen folds

The fragrance of a rose
