When the last word is written
and the last breath taken
will I be called an icon
of my time by my peers,
a master of rhyme, well-suited
to be saluted in coffee house tributes
adored by the masses with
college classes dissecting my works
and future poets looking back
while murmuring "Now, THERE was a poet!"
Will anthologies be incomplete
without my brilliance represented
and will my strong resiliance inspire others
to reach their highest potential,
essential necessity for those striving
to be known as poet?

Will there be a poem of mine
or couplet or even one single
line in which the entire world will know
as well as their own name?
Will that be my claim to fame
as The Raven relates to Poe
will there be some work of mine
they will know belongs to me
or some second line that will spring
into being by hearing the first,
some automatic burst of recognition
such as "A poem as lovely as a tree"?

Will I become a statue in the park
where passers will say 'he led by example'
and trample manicured lawns to get
a closer look at me? Will my base
be chipped by critic diamond-bit
quips and turned into a billboard
underscored by brush strokes bold
and defiant trumpeting the exploits
of Crypts and Bloods and Bill loves Tina forever?
Will pigeons find my head a perfect
place for nesting as bird dung falls,
resting on lips that once drank wine
and sang of knights, crusades, promises kept,
mistakes made in folly of youth,
now silenced by the truth of the grave?

Or will I be nothing more than a stone
on the ocean floor, polished clean by the motion
of unending movements of the tides
where all that resides are other invertebrae
like me, out of view from a humanity
that doesn't care and never did,
hidden in blues from those who look
but do not see the me there
lying in the sea.
Should a child find me on the shore
and fling me out to count the skips
one, two , three, four
before turning away in disinterest
will I feel the foam envelope me
and know that I am home?

Poignant as always, Balladeer, and raised the deep-seated hopes, fears, and dreams of all who take up pen, brush, chisel, charcoal...all who create something from nothing.

Well now ... I see you've taken my challenge of wanting to "sneek in rhymes" into free-verse and made it absolutely spectacular. Is there nothing you cannot do, Michael?

Truly, this flows beautifully, and the rhymes come into just the perfect places to make me sit back and simply say ... you are brilliant!

PS, you WILL be remembered sweet poet. Of that ... I have no question.

Beautifully written, Michael.

Best wishes and big hugs,
/Kit

Excerpt...
quote:

"Can it be getting dark so soon?" He winced up at the sun.
"It's growing dim and I thought that the day had just begun.
I think, before I travel on, I'll get a little rest ..........
And, quietly, the boy died from that small pain in his chest

I don't recall what happened then. I think I must have cried;
I put my arms around him and I pulled him to my side
And, as I held him to me, I could feel our wounds were pressed
The large one in my heart against the small one in his chest.

With the exception
of the pigeons,
the answer is,

Yes.

You will most certainly be known as Poet.

...Saved faster than you can say, "Poe-et"!

My goodness, that was brill! With a poem like that, I don't think you have to concern yourself with the last stanza! The first two, definitely apply to you, Deer One!

Dear Mike, Yes you will  be remembered by all who like me have printed out your words and put them into a three ringed notebook, to take out and share and  discuss. Your Small Pain in My Side still hangs and is being read each day. Your wonderful work, Treblinka still hangs, I hope, in  the museum. I know the one I gave it to, with your permission, has passed it on to her teacher daughter who shares it with her students every year as they study the Holocaust. So if they do not remember your name, I know they will always remember your words.  best to you, martyjo

I will remember you
How could I not!
Remember your rhyme
perfectly written
with little dots
of love
and humor
woven into stanzas
of cadenced lines
How could I not
remember!
Your words
of rhyme, in time
have touched so many
as they continuously
touch my heart
my soul
Tell me,
how then, could I not
remember you
my friend!

Great ponderings of a true poet! You can be everything, a poet is limitless by definition.

Beyond, beyond ...
and further still ...

Michael

This really touched to that place in me that ponders these same questions.  As for the ocean floor, I may be there to keep you company.  Wouldn't that be fun?  and pssst...I have your book...one day years from now it may be found within my special belongings and someone will say,  "wow"!!

Alicat...right you are. When we leave our footprints on the sands of time, will there be more there than just a heel?

smartchick...you can be sure I'll always remember you, too. You are a very special friend and you will always have a friend in me.

MGROVES...when a poem can get someone thinkin', that's as good as it can get. Thank you...

Kit...you will be remembered, too, my friend. We have a date in the next life, don't forget

Sunshine...you can really hit a guy where he lives and I ain't talking about Florida! That would be my choice. Thank you...

Earth Angel...well, live a long time so that I can remain alive in your favorites. I like it there!!

scorpio....thank you. I prefer you thoughts over Toerag's, who said he would never GET stoned without thinking of my words!! I appreciate it...

Martyjo...you have been such a pleasure to know and I appreciate very much all you have done in supporting me and spreading my work. You are a treasure and I thank you more than you know

Titia....and how could I ever forget my crazy Dutchie who dances in the moonlight around the pool, gets little red spots on her cheeks when embarrassed, who giggles like a little girl, pigtails flying behind her when something strikes her fancy, who takes pictures of clouds and names sheep after poets...how? We are stuck with our memories, knuffel lady, and that's fine with me!

Margherita...limitless by definition - well said!!! I like it!  Thank you, miss..

Passing shadows...your world is good enough for me and I'll have to get sad so I can write some better stuff soon!! My thanks for all of your support over the years, Dixie..

Martie...as long as they don't say "Wow! How lucky to find this since I'm out of toilet paper!!!"
I'd love to have you next to me on the ocean floor....anywhere with you would rock!!

Marty..check you e-mail

iliana...that's really a sweet thing to say. I appreciate you....
