Moved from a shack to a barn

0 posted 2005-05-24 10:38 PM

The night sky is filled with dying gods
And soon, stars will become merely stars

Orion, once proud hunter, is slender as his bow
As unstrung and aimless

His famous belt is looped twice around his waist
He has gone hungry and is gaunt

The seven sisters have become skeletal as well
They huddle close, their lips are stilled

Their flesh has blown swirling into dust

Mercury, flightless, no longer bears a message
His feet have been plucked clean of feathers

He has nowhere to go

Phobos and Deimos, themselves fading
Are attending Mars, dressing him for the pyre

His sword, rusted and dulled, has been sheathed

And Venus, still lovely, even at the end
Has long ago, stepped from her temple

She resides now, in the memories of old men

Yes ... that's exactly the nostalgia we hang onto as we age and no doubt the contellations and great gods of the past feel it too.  Well done.

A distinguished life, endless with dreams as many as the stars… yet your poem depicts characteristics of aging in something we think would never die ~ The heavens, where we place our hopes.  Sad write, well done.

Wow, delightfully dressed in humble yet, powerful images, what a way to describe Orion

A sad write....and well described.  I wonder if I feel as they do.  Hmmm...

wranx,

Although this may not be the theme, I am reminded of the light pollution around the rural area where I grew up.  Fondly, I remember standing out in the yard with my father, talking about the constellations.  Progress now is at the doorway, and lights dim the brilliance of the night sky.  It seems there is more sparkle in watering eyes than the stars...  I so miss the breathtaking night skies!  Fortunately, they are still there if one is a night owl--just have to wait for the streetlights to go to bed in the wee hours of the morning.

   Very much enjoyed this, wranx.

Enjoyed this. Sends new thoughts and ideas to me. The skys over central Florida are clear and the stars beam brightly.I will be out side looking up more often now, hoping to entice Venus back for you. martyjo

That is why it is up to poets and dreamers to revive the imagination, the wonder, the mystery of the Universe, of life.
There perhaps we may see the rebirth of Venus, before she perishes in the minds of old men...there Mars returns, sword drawn, shining, with razor edge...

Imagination and wonder, the antidote to reductionism...

Perhaps knowing all...also removes the mystery and the wonder of it all...

Wranx, a bitter-sweet blend
of beautiful sadness.

Thank you for this
