It’s been one of those days again
the kind you scratch from the calendar
or wish you could turn back, start over again

But of course,  it is what I make of it.

Unravel me as if I were a ball of twine,
throw my carcass off the side of the cliffs
and be done with it! The anger roils, boils my heart.

That’s how I felt all morning.

And then I happened to run into you.
You, who have a sentence of mere weeks to live
and I felt so stupid, so shallow, so full of it.

I nearly cried.

So what if I crushed my right hand and I am right-handed?
It shall heal, eventually. You’ve been told your life force is ebbing,
yet you found time to smile, asked how I was doing today.

I mumbled some lame reply.

Did you know that at that moment,
I thought about hugging you, in public?
Both of us might have been embarrassed.

To hell with embarrassment!

I only learned your name today, Gary.
Still,  I should have held you, hugged you,
kissed your cheek anyway.

Tomorrow, if you return, I shall do just that, my new friend.

Yes, you must hug him. We sometimes do not get a second chance to give warmth to another human being. Let us know if you see Gary again. hugs, Chris

Kacy, you were human. Point being, Gary is still human, too.  Bet you a dime to a donut he's thinking he didn't do enough for YOU.

Tomorrow, you will make it better, not only because you have so much heart, but because you've been heartened by those you chose to share your humanness with.

Hugs to you, m'dear; now, pass 'em on.

The power of a hug is far stronger than most realize, my friend, especially when given from the soul. My son, who graduates from Texas A&M this May, told me not long ago that he's so glad I taught him not to be "ashamed" to hug or kiss his dad in front of his friends (and there was a time when it "embarrassed" him, but the "lesson" was more important, I thought). He said many have mentioned they wished  they could have done the same with their dad.

I'm a huggy person,so hug your friend for me too. Especially when one's time is short there is never too many of those.

Jimmy

By the way, the way you addressed this here was wonderfully done.
