The Neighbor Lady's Pool A siren night, the moon at full, the air laden with moisture and the scent of daphne oozing in through the screened windows, I tiptoed down the cool, oak stairs, crossed the carpet then eased the doors that opened french-like onto the patio. Stepping out, I paused and stood for a moment while my young fingers reassured themselves around the deep keel of my sailboat. A wall of stone ran dark and long between my mother's rose garden and the swimming pool that entirely took up the adjacent back 'yard'. Through the thorns I crept towards it. Felt its height. Reached up the sloop. Then, careful of the sails while placing it on top, climbed after it despite the coarseness molesting through my pajamas. RMW |
