Stay near the fence and wait for the shade
for the sun dulls your senses as you strain
toward the sour apples beyond your reach.

Eyes, once spheres unto themselves, glaze
and become frightened of  all shadows. Ears
must warn of yellow jackets and the steady
gait of the surer hooves.

Insect blemished hide drapes a sloping back
that cannot recall even its labor let alone ever
entering a race, arena or show.

Unsteady legs move only to break monotony
as a tail whips away a desultory audience.
What do you wait for in that corner of the field?

Long overlooked by the attentions of farmer’s
daughters, long forgotten by since forgotten
field hands, gravity alone calls to you.

Now dreams and nondreams mingle as sad eyes
betray the sun as a moon you never knew,
jaundiced and reflecting the steady diet
of the yellow flowers you prefer to mull.

Quick and natural you clear a path for the stallion,
who, regardless of the day or night of your woolgathering,
stands above you and midfield. His shuddered flank
causing you flinch, head high and shameless

Brava sir..
so pleased to see you post....

choose to chance the rapids,
dare to dance the tides...

Not only is this a keeper...
this is a framer,
but I think I shall use barbed wire,
to keep its message
intact...

but I will allow the gate to swing free,
allowing the poem to know
it can run away,
should it wish to.

In short?  IWIHWT...

I truly do.

Your empathy for this beautiful creature is touching.
