Was It Was it just a sliver in the cold windswept night that tugged briefly in the midst of fright Was it just a thought that twitched in the wind rain falling on something I would never send Was it scurrying feet lost long ago that dared to bare their mettle to treat the hills and so and not a foe Was it the rain slackening that worried me above all no longer hidden in the dusk shadow and soul bared so Was it a small stream I danced on and climbed all those rugged step now covered with a slime I could not avoid in my haste my urgency my desire Was it an empty valley that grass flowed down wet around my ankles greasy like a clown seeking applause Was it just a hiccup or something I never ate that lurched my backbone to match my front’s grate full speed of light to ease a burden running might Was it just a feeling as I crossed the hill of peace alone and with my own will. |
