I poured myself three fingers
And sat where I could watch her skin
As it trapped clouds in the brittle she embraced
In the red cold of evening
                   This late January day
That found the air spiced with oak
Green burned by those who had not cut their own

I wondered as old oak spilled down my throat
If the way she closed her eyes to the sun
Made her colder than even the bare few degrees
Mercury showed in his glass
But knew my hands were too old now
To dip them into the chill and not have them ache
Far longer and deeper than they did
When I too was filled with adventure

My eyes would not close nor would my heart
So another 3 were dazzling amber in my glass
   As I stared empty eyed
In an echo of coyote yelps that called brethren
To come share the cold repast
         Of this the winter’s beast

Knowing somewhere
    Skin was warmer than hearts
And hearts were warmer than her
Who trapped the  clouds in ice

Sir, you've had many "bests" of poems...
THIS...

seems to top 'em all.

But I know you'll fool me,
and do it yet again.

And...

just hush.

amazing imagery
"the air spiced with oak
Green burned by those who had not cut their own"
and having chopped my fair share of woodpiles in Alaska, I could smell this scene, though it was never oak I burned at that latitude

I seem to miss too many good poems here.  This one is wonderful!  Glad it bounced up again!!!

I hope there's some of that Jack left, my headache is almost gone.
