Moonset Familiar music curls into my ears. I lie on my side, facing the sea; torn by the need to sleep and a desire to hold this moment: waves rushing to meet lava walls, moon slices dancing on water and the soft shiver of palms. Your warm back rests against mine, your breath slow and deep. Far off, above the ocean, two thunderheads signal one another. I imagine two spaceships communicating, announcing heaven has been found. My eyes focus on the shore. Phosphor plays on water’s edge like a million grunion running. I drift. I am awakened by the clash of cymbals -- a four a.m. crescendo of high tide breaking against bluffs. The lagoon fills with seawater: breakfast for two sea turtles. Arms encircle me from behind. On the horizon, something wonderful: a squashed orange, setting over the Pacific. |
