outside sun blazes
melting foreheads of
the renovators next door-
didn't they start that project
last year?

inside, winter has arrived

again I experience your
warm browns regarding me
with a cautious frown

shields up, we warily patrol
newly staked territory
in full agreement that no
prisoners will be taken

my total warfare frown battles
silently with your cool regard
we dance the rigid steps of
mistrust, flamboyantly avoiding
any contact in an effort to
goad into action

eight-thirty am,

times up!

with a cold nod we part-
you to your station across
town, and I, here with the
mini warriors in the making

five-thirty pm you are back
battle scarred from work
immediately on alert from
this morning's stand off

my hair,
turned springy fright wig
from pool duty conjures
a smile you attempt to
hide to hold my tempest
at bay

your arms open wide
in white flag wave of "willya?"
instantly, I'm in
grateful for the love
and comfort always
there for me

later,
another battle shall be waged
but there'll only be winners
here tonight...
