Off the street the beggar trudged in
the host offered biscuits from a tin
a salacious hand gingerly pick a piece
in gratitude, a hanky appeared from a crease

The beggar, a man whose appearance galled
soon had an attentive public enthralled
the crease in the jacket was a clever fold
a vagabond delved into street magic
if one could be so bold.

It was the eve of season's carols
not a soul would be on the street;
were he to sample wine from a town barrel
he'd then curl up on a cot to sleep

A magician performed, in beggars clothes
on his lapel he sported a now faded rose,
a night to be thankful for lives of plenty
passed quickly for his pockets remained empty.

Not a penny was deposited in his upturned hat
the gentry was galled by his mannerism that
free performance was something they loved to see
but when asked for money they could not agree.

oh Martin, how sad

talent should be rewarded, and even moreso when it's all a person knows

I see people on the street sometimes downtown, magicians and musicians...I always put in my dollar

you're a generous soul, but you know as well as I do that it takes more than a dollar..sometimes its a matter of making a better choice in what one chooses to do

Hi Martin...
I am a firm believer in paying street performers.
Here you have to have a license and I feel a lot of them are very talented and entertaining.
Well written food for thought.

I also love to pay a performer, I am one too and many times I go upaid. I know that one has to have a license and if you don't you get hauled off the street in Canada and end up with a fine. Licenses aren't available for everyone..that's why other choices have to be made. Have a happy holiday Nancy.

other choices...better things to do...

makes me think of my life here...

now I can associate myself with that street performer...

yes, sometimes it's a matter of making better choices, yes, indeed
