I wrote this after reading an article in the paper about all the Christmas parties that so many people attend at this time of year. The article also mentioned that there are thousands of homeless people who have never even been to a party and who suffer in silence, void of love and care.
I began writing the first verse as a fairly typical partygoer with the second verse written as a homeless person. I then alternated each verse for the rest of the poem. I found it quite a challenge to write in this way and I thank you, the reader, for taking time out of your busy day to read this.
* * *
I'm off to my next party To spread some Christmas cheer There'll be freebies in abundance Just like every other year
I sit here in my solitude No one cares how I feel I have no idea at all When I'll get my next meal
I hope to get a Christmas bonus Boy, I really need the cash I wonder who I will impress At the yearly office bash
I watch a large brown cockroach As he climbs upon the wall Tomorrow I'll go begging Downtown, outside the mall
I have some last minute presents I need to buy from the store Each year seems more expensive From the year before
It must be nearly Christmas Decorations are everywhere People are in such a hurry Right through me they stare
Finally I've finished shopping And I must say I feel fine As I walk out through the store And give the beggar my last dime
I wonder what life holds in store It is something that I fear Thank you, Sir, Merry Christmas I guess he just didn't hear

Sue, this is such a sad poem, but beautifully written. Loneliness is indeed a terrible feeling.
