in the shadows

0 posted 2004-12-16 05:49 AM

Out beyond the raw edge,
within the shadows of monuments to loving greed
of playing at the want of need and living well,
the bleeding ledge of life at its make believe frontiers,
where emotions poison mind and soul,
where my goal is just surviving my own homemade Hell,
is the hot burst of red-eyed tears.

This country is threading through dangerous times,
we can’t even make peace with ourselves,
we sleep as young in dreams of craving toys
on the stumbling edge of real civil war,
forgetting we’ve been here before
ignoring its chains on the shade at the door
bleeding hot blood of foolish joys.

I’m thankful we’ve not yet slipped over;
we bury our livestock and burn up our wheat
in a world where our cable brings us our views,
and assumptions of luxuries fluff up our goals;
in a world where real hunger
shreds children’s dreams in their souls,
we always grow more than we eat.

I walk through the markets and warehouses here
and see food spilling over the shelves,
I am thankful for still ripping breath from the air,
still knowing the reasons my body sheds tears
for peaceful deaths of friends no longer here,
still thankful I can walk without fear in the dark
though I’m slower of late in my years.

"we bury our livestock and burn up our wheat
in a world where our cable brings us our views,"

we sleep as young in dreams of craving toys
on the stumbling edge of real civil war,

the entire poem holds more truth then most are aware of...darlin, it is inevidible...the line which most shot out at me was.....the above, and was just thinking about this very subject this morning...while watching the news...about our Social Security...the government is reining in way to much hold, they are exhausting our funds, bad leaders producing a very weak nation....and we are becoming very weak, greedy and the horrible thing is, our society actually believes they deserve all this? (over paid execs)

Oh, believe me, there have been some marvelous technological advances...but we should be way further along, morally and scientifically, and we will, when human beings forget about material wealth designer clothing, huge homes, furniture, cars, which does not create status, not really, we need to consentrate on a wealth that would rule the world...in which everyone, must play a part in...

Love and hugs to you

Brilliant!  It speaks to so many issues but of course this really caught my eye,

"This country is threading through dangerous times,
we can’t even make peace with ourselves,
we sleep as young in dreams of craving toys
on the stumbling edge of real civil war,
forgetting we’ve been here before
ignoring its chains on the shade at the door
bleeding hot blood of foolish joys."

How sadly true, we can't make peace with ourselves how on earth are others expected to follow that lead?

I am slowing down too, time to reflect on what's really important isn't it?

Iceman, your writings make me speechless.
They always make me get into deep thought,
which is a good thing. You tell so many truths. Thank you.
Hugs,
Ethel
