He sailed the storms and rolling wave behind a lass who he did crave. Her name inscribed his heart to rest inside this sailor’s rugged chest. He searched the ends of the round earth as did one man who gave him birth. He combed the stars and called again. As gentle breezes touched his skin. His left her there in wait of him her cries still heard though growing dim. She shut the door to still the winds as her loneliness slowly mends. A month did pass and then a year as her eyes shed one more lost tear. A son they had, he had not seen with hair of brown and eyes most green. They left one day, the two of them their faces red and frowns so grim. His ship sailed not in to their shore A rugged man lost evermore. And now a statue stands for them, those souls who drowned and could not swim. A granite stone planted in soil holding a lamp of blubbers oil. And every night the flame still burns as a wind sock billows and turns to the west in wait of a cry from those now lost, asleep they lie. For ages the sails have coursed the sea in search of their true destiny. The oceans their home, place of rest God speed them all for they are blessed. Ah, this takes me back in time when sailing the seas could be a terminal job - often. And to be a heart which waited without modern communications to ally fears - how lonely - you've cast this one well, dear Sir- Susan Happiness isn't something that happens to you, it's created from within you. Joy is a state of mind. |

Barry, you are the master of this genre! You can take the man from the sea but not the sea from the man. A sad and soul-touching sea saga, Love & Sea Salt, Linda P.S. It pleases me that my poem inspired you to write this one! Well done! |
