It’s all in the mind and the mindset of fools
who believe in the placing of words
ever nicely just so on half of a page
time after time for all time.

There’s a reason and rhyme,
always a rhyme,
somewhere between the lines
until I tap dance, clickety, clack,
on the floor, the ceiling,
and walls.

Out in the air I inhale and exhale
with the lungs of the nearly insane
till shallow I breathe
once more to be sure
the fool of all fools is me.

From a pub round the corner
the barman calls “time”
and my peace is shattered by them
rollicking, rolling, teetering out,
from the shadows of their former selves.

Disarmed by the light they recoil in fright
(always a rhyme – aren’t I right?)
and I smile the smile
of a woman turned wise
long before the start of this night.

I thought I would wave and I did half and half
sort of weak like a new born babe
but then I remembered
it’s no use being right
if my timing is all out of kilt.

And I thought of kilts, of overland hills,
of formations of rock by the sea
and maybe a lake, a tree, perhaps two,
and decided to turn about face.

Lo and behold, I spied in the grass
a woman pretending
but that cannot be, there’s no one like me
who believes in shadows and dreams.

So I took up a book, held it out at arm’s length,
and read all the lines read before
thinking to find … somewhere in the lines
some meaningful measure of worth
but I only found tales of maidens in woe
time after time for all time.

So the drunks from the pub went in search of true love
while backwards I walked to be free
but no one could see the very real me
for pretending she was to be me.

If you’re hoping to find an end to this tale,
nothing ends till the fat lady sings,
so tra, la, la, la, I’ve sung, and I’m done
but I’m not in search of true love
today, tomorrow, next week, next year,
or even when I’m asleep.

Love is for bums on the street with no sheet
and I’ve got a bed, a wonderful bed,
in a room with insightful views
and we share everything together as one
time after time after time -
but not for all time
for time like this tale
has come to a long delayed end!!

Helen

I so enjoyed this whimsical but serious trip in the neighborhood of you and your mind.

"but that cannot be, there’s no one like me
who believes in shadows and dreams."

I know a few who do, including I!
