If She Only Knew

each piece
a touch of her
a memory of when,
knowing that I'll never hear
or see or feel again

as I
dared to handle
each piece thinking of
when and where I last saw it
around her neck, on her hand
or pinned to her clothing

alone
I sat staring
at boxes, some red, some clear
some with latches to open
none organized, with items entangled,
taking me most of the dim afternoon

there were
baby bracelets,
one with two names,
then with three, taking me back
to the popularity of the time

there were
pins with her name
on them, awards for scouting,
and volunteering and a silver wine bracelet
engraved for their fortieth wedding anniversary
(four years ago)

I untangled
"I love you's"  and "#1's"
and the "Best Mom" and smiled, as I
pictured her opening up these gifts
on those special occasions

Leaving those
for the others,
I selected a few memories for myself,
organized the rest to make it easier
for the next to go through

and then
showed him the baby teeth
that she had saved
hugged him goodbye,
and left...with a tear or two,
and a smile in my heart.

M

I believe kleenex would be in order after reading this one...this tugs at the reader's heartstrings.

A bittersweet read, done very well, thank you for writing and sharing.

Yes, I have been there.  Most difficult, selecting treasures that hold dear memories.
This was beautifully done.

You are such a courageous spirit, Maureen.  I think I broke down in this one about mid-way.  This was a beautiful write....it could not have been an easy one.  I have two sisters, and I can tell you, I don't know how you have coped with the loss of one.  Sometimes, I guess, we find a strength we didn't know we had.  Take care....and hugs sent your way, jo

I've often wondered what others will think when going through the mementos I have ammassed through the years and would they be as touch by them as you hers? I hope what I have saved touches someones heart like this poem has touched mine
