Still stinging from feeling
Caustic lashes on her skin
So tender in its youth
That they rekindled blinding flashes
of black light in my own
Blue sky of forever-wondering why
It starts.

Again, whispered roars deafen me
That sick silent thunder so relentless
In violently shaking alive
Every single ounce of self-doubt
Guilt, disgust, and regret.

Reappearing low at first
In muffled rumbled warnings
A pending earthquake I fear
That opens old healed sores
To an unforgiving sea of salt.

Familiar pangs of pain crash shores
Of a heart so ridge-worn with life,
Up to there, and back again
Where storms raged my soul
As driftwood in a sorrowful sea
Just like her once.

Clouds rumble through cascading rain,
As I sit still
In a puddle of wonder why tears
Thinking I am surely going to drown
In the desolation of this self pity.

Relentlessly painful memories
slash open my tired old brain
Now just a seasoned veteran
At hiding in the darkness
Very seldom seeing the light.

How can I possibly inspire her?
Or be felt in her heart,
Unless this tender young soul
Has resided in the abyss of sigh
In the blue sky of why?

Inspired by a sweet 13 year old young lady that emailed me today day, and I thank her.

The closing lines are far reaching, and the image you chose to aid in your expression is stunning.

"In the desolation of this self pity."

Sharon, I love the entire piece but that line up there I like best.  Just because we all indulge once in the while...
