Kansas City Jubilee (Back to You)

I have found myself on the heartworn highways
promising I'll make it back home to you
again and again
I have written for you my broken pen poetry
promising I'll make the last train back to you
through wind and rain

Every rail rolling off into the distance
every hotel night spent in penance
I would write the whole night through
I would write these letters to you
I know your eyes would never see
but they were just for me
just for me

I have found myself in the California spring
San Francisco sunlight warm my bones
my aching bones
I have written for you my open heart poetry
promises I'd make to the dialtone
I'd wonder if you were even home

Have I forgotten how to come back to you?
have I forgotten how I could be true?
is the scent of your dark hair lost to me?
my memories falling away, lost at sea?
Don't know where to turn, wherever I roam
Don't know if I can find my way home
back to you

I have found myself outside Salt Lake City
hot guitar strings have bled me dry
too many times
I have bled myself into my scrap poetry
promising my promises won't lie
turning lies to rhymes

Every long dark road off into the night
every hour of light spent in fright
spinning in dreamland safe from harm
sleeping quietly in your arms
tell the world, tell the girl I love
send my message, send a dove
carrying my messages
carrying my poetry pages
back to you
just for you

I'll make it back to you someday
you will know me by the song I sing
I'll make it back home someday
I'll get to you on heartstring wings
back to you

Hi Zach

This was a fine read.  I could sense so much love and longing as I read your words.

Take care........Sue

Zach, this is my favorite from your pen.
It's filled with the music of a heart that knows how to feel what is real.
Thank you, for sharing this beatiful piece.
