I think its finally time for me
  time to wake up...
     time for me to see
that life holds still for  no one
while rivers are running deep
but that putting oneself first
isn't always bad,
not when it entails
making some of the past
feelings of sad
go away....

I've been taught all my life
"that you should put others first"
but sometimes our own souls
are the self same ones needing nursed..

I've tried to treat others right,
giving of myself
and trying to share the light
  but now I'm praying for forgiveness
     for just this once I'm being true to me...

and if that makes me a sinner?
Lord, I pray you'll understand...
but just this once
I need some time for me....

It sounds like you and I were taught the same thing. But, let me tell you, there is nothing wrong with taking time for yourself. I don't thinks God meant for us to neglect ourselves, in order to put everyone else first. We have to put ourselves, first, in order to be able to do for others. We are just as important as others. Remember that! I fully understand the way you feel. As they say, Been There, Done That!
