A Hint of Fall

The cool snuck up in behind
a passing front,
having gone through
earlier morn, thundering
its intent, noisily
spitting rain then torrents
come waves, but now,
gently, the day having
passed by as well, coolness
brushing warm cheeks in
promise, having lacked
scorching burn,
the scent of petunias peak
memories, junipers
fragrance the dog’s walk,
a feel of coming crunching
leaves to beware crickets
and still, I wait for summer
peaches to evolve, to taste
sun’s kiss once more
before the
first of fall

and there, in scorched
Bermuda grass it stood, looking for
all in its time a piece of
thin iron,
I plucked it up, to
find last year’s remnant
of a leaf, lace tattered, not yet
a skeleton for it had withered
and dried, mummified itself
on it’s own carcass of stem,
iron brown but retaining shape

if, if I were to put forefinger to
thumb with the desiccated remains
between to feel the pressure of
warm and blood and skin, it would
surely crumble and yet…yet

it withstood sun, wind, rain
and temperatures for its own season
then one more, still intact, still
…around… and I am caught up
in its labyrinth of time, this ageless
moment of capture that, if simply
placed in a spot of memory, it would
continue in its form of weathered
beauty, an aide memoire as even the
most fragile of God’s gifts have
value, that a greater Hand allowed
me to pick this leaf up for a reason, to
perhaps gild its edges in gold, a cue
to my soul that I attempt to age as
gracefully as this leaf…

the first of my Fall is coming
I shall not wait for it but
run to it, blessing
its welcome in
my spring’s
memory

~*~

I kept that leaf, tinged its edges
with a bit of gold, and encased it
in a small glass box...so that I can
see it, holding its own, through all
seasons...

Perhaps, over time, it will disintegrate
even more...but it has held steady, for a
couple of years now.  I keep it to remind me
of this poem, and of the poets I hold so
dear...and the reasons why grace requires
lace...

amazing, just amazing...you and the leaf and how you so describe every single speck of miracle dripping from your fingers...Sunshine
you are a wonder...magnificent writing here, and one of my favorites of yours...though all are through you, by a master's hand.

Karilea

I think our thoughts were similar in poetry today...I wish I had found a leaf like that, but you brought it to me so clearly with this poem, that I didn't need to.  Thank you!

WOW! Karilea, I hardly know what to say. This is just unbelievable and I shall save it and read it all winter as I wait for spring.

P.S. Ooops, I forgot to save it here; although I have printed it out and put it in my book of 'special' poems.

In so many poems you write, your connection to the passing of time in nature and to cross-generational links is unmatched.  Well done.  Ken

Karilea
I have read this several times, and enjoyed it each...now it is time to bump it back up..

What I see here is both physical and metaphysical....the capturing of time passed, by saving its produced structure in a box..
Yet you know that it will crumble someday...It is like an emotional memory...that does not crumble but is put away in a corner of the brain to resurface, sometimes at the most unusual times, yet it always remains...Remember physical things (matter) can be changed or altered but cannot ever be completly destroyed, just like a memory, be it bad or good...

These are the thoughts that reading this poem gave me...

This is an absolutely amazing poem...fall is indeed my favorite season and you've portrayed its beauty to a tee here. I think from time to time we are all those leaves that must withstand the passing of time, oh to hold up so gracefully

I am so unbelievably moved by your words, that I can barely key a reply! Karilea, YOU are poetry!

Your saving of that leaf and giving it a home in a glass box, speaks volumes of what a truly gentle and sensitive soul you have.

Love & Sunlight,
Linda
