'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear
And grace my fears relieved
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed

John walked on,
From novena done,
In his collar won
Turning from sin to prayer.
Streets he knew
And yet ever new,
He was going to
His home, a house of prayer.

Saint Jude guide,
Ever on his side,
Hope lets him now glide
Through a world once too sad,
Through the streets
Always new friends greets,
If liars or cheats,
He knows they are not so bad.

Before dawn
Walks with collar on
A sleepless night done
To the humble church his home,
Home once more,
Open is the door
Not like t’was before,
In the basement not alone.

What do you do when you find a wretch
Stretched out asleep on your bed?
Do you quickly the police fetch
Or joyfully aid him instead?
John thought not at all
For he knew this call,
And went for blanket, water and bread.

Isn't it best that way?
One at a time...
to pay forward each, by one at a time?

Better to hear the heart of one,
than to be one of a mass,
not hearing the Word through the rumble...

you're on a roll, sir...keep it up,
and we'll have to serve lunch!
