The Heart of Texas

Deep in the heart
of these windswept
Southern Plains
lies the emerald prairie
at the epicenter of it all.

Amidst the Longhorn and Angus bawls,
the coastal grass bows humbly
to the sweet Southern song
carried upon that sultry summer eve.

June bugs sweep across golden hues
in the festive dance that orbits
the center of their desire
in the confines of my lamplight.

The surreal croak
of grumpy old bullfrogs
orchestrated in the pitched chirp
of anxious crickets
serves to back the royal inquisition
of Great-Horned Owls
perched patiently above me.

And in the distance
the coyote chimes
his wanting cry
in search of another
upon this evening's teaming field.

From the porch I sit
with that sultry summer breeze
grazing my seasoned cheek
watching, listening,
to life unfolding before me
underneath countless
shimmering stars;

slightly less brilliant tonight
in that soft, silvery hue
strewn across the Heavens above me.

Deep in the heart of Texas,
by Corsicana way,
lies that emerald prairie
under that sultry summer breeze
waiting to sing to me
that sweet Southern lullaby again.

Hi Kevin. LOVE THIS! You made me want to pack my bags and head for Texas! LOL! Seriously though I love your desriptive verses in this piece. I could see the images very well. Bravo my friend. Very well done.

Remember, if you're not part of the future, you're history!

Kevin,
Yuppir a travelogue right here in the blue pages. Described so well I too wanted to pack and hit the road. You ARE the man. I love how you write.

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.

I was in Texas only once, and to be honest did not see it as beautifully as you have written your heart of it here unfortunately.  I think once Texas invades your heart and soul it becomes an oasis of beauty to those that are proud to be called a Texan.  Beautiful write.

I know of this place well....find the heart
of the state,  and you will be less than 50
miles from the birthplace of this man.

Yes,  those coyotes still howl,  every night
when the breeze has lain and the only other
sound you hear is the pumpjack in it's
rhythmic dance,  dredging the crude.

It will always be my home,  though I am far
away...

And your poem brought me closer to there,
if only for a little while.  Thanx Kevo.

Just wanted to say thanks for all of the kind replies to this poem.  I really appreciate living here (when it's not the season for thunderstorms and tornado watches).  It is simply like waking up on vacation here (until I get ready for work anyway).  Those of you familiar with this area of Texas I'm glad I could take you back.  Barry, what town around here do you hail from?  Anyway, thank you endlessly for your kind replies.

Warm regards to you all,

Kevin

Your words describe Texas well, being a southern gal, I enjoyed it very much.

I hope it took you back a bit.  The Indian Blanket wild flowers are in bloom here - yet another thing I appreciate about this little slice of heaven I live in.  Can't you hear the song they sing?  they're calling you back!  I have others floating around Forum #32 that may take you back if your familiar with the blue-bonnets, indian paints, and mossy oaks.  Thank you for the kind reply and the time you took to read my post.

Your poetic friend,

Kevin

Kevin,
I was strolling the page and saw I missed several of your posts.  I just can't keep up with everyone.  This brings nice pictures and sounds to me, thinking of the bullfrogs in my mother's pond.  We don't hear them very much anymore.  I've heard it has something to do with the ultraviolet rays.  Don't really know why, but I sure miss them.  Thanks for bring that ber-Ummmph back.

Thank you Miscellanea and Gentle Spirit for your kind replies.

Misc - Yes the bull frogs can be a bit loud at times.  They seem to come in cycles.  Sometimes, I won't hear any and other times they are hogging center stage.  I love the sound of fish jumping in my tank (pond) the owls' simple, persistent questions, and the coyote calls.  It is magical.  Occasionally we have bobcats running through the yard or drinking from our tank.  Beautiful and exciting.  I equate home to waking up on vacation (until I have to get ready for work).

G.S. - Yes.  Come.  There is plenty of room for you here in what some here call the "Greatest Country in the United States".  This would be a great time to visit.  We have experienced unseasonably cool weather here this summer averaging about 92.  This week has been relatively dry (a break from humidity) and in the mid 80's (California weather) without a cloud in sight - picture perfect!  Of course, you need to visit my side of Texas (the green side)  We average about 37" of rain per year so it's quite green and nestled among prairies of dancing grass, blue bonnets, indian paintbrushes, indian blankets, blackeyed susans, mesquite (quite annoying but great for BBQ) and mighty mossy oaks.  Come.  You are most welcome here.  Just don't tell 'em your a Yankee.  Being a native Californian I use the word "Neutral" quite a bit!  (Just kidding)

Respectfully,

Kevin
