Two Times Because, the Third’s my Choice…

In those days of some early 60’s
when a dollar was stretched in cry
from here to next week, maybe
you’ve read that prose, where Mom dressed me
in old fashioned ways,
and a wallflower girl wore white
to her first winter dance…

then those later 60’s, come senior prom,
with a hand-me-over from the beloved aunt
finding it’s way to me, I had to laugh,
for it was white…
and everyone else would be in neon focused
limes and pinks, or other 60’s templates,
but at least the wallflower
had a date…

so twice of memory I wore white,
not immediately recognizing it would portend
a choice,
when I wear black on a day by day basis,
utilitarian, which friends abhor,
“What, no color?” They cry!

[Notes the poet, marriage doesn’t count…]

But black balances white light of moods,
sometimes too cheerful for Mondays,
too light-hearted, supremely overboard optimistic,
forever the hoptimist…all the way to Fridays…

black lending seriousness atmosphere to keep one grounded.

Oh, I wear my sign quite well.

Choices…

So, in braiding recent thoughts carefully, fingering them
well, almost wantonly, previewing my closet…

going by an old-fashioned budget…
of make-do because it’s a brand of mind…

and because it’s not the 60’s anymore
even if I could, if I would want to,
but nothing would travel better,
nothing would wear me better,
nothing would bring me closer to then,
than what is before me now…

I will once again wear white, something old, not borrowed,
but mine, fitting the lines of classic design,
and me, wearing my smile…

it’s been thirty-five years since I saw them…
those that branded me a virgin of life,

and they may decide, now, that the wallflower
aged well.

But no one will smile, inwardly, better than I.

~*~

Just reflecting on some memories to come...

You show them, girl!!

and have a great time when you do...

funny, black is my favorite  color to wear too..has been for years

and when I went to my reunion I was surprised at how the beautiful people had aged (even with the face lifts and liposuctions and implants...)  I came away very contented with myself

hugs
M
p.s. I never wore white well, even winter white wool..I would always sit in something or spill something on me.

The "wallflower" seems to have aged well...
The last line is the most important in the poem....well done

Come read to me some poem,
Some simple and heartfelt lay,
That shall soothe this restless feeling
And banish the thoughts of day.
