Hiding from flies
And foul competitors
In high grass, living,
But breathing in gusts;
His crown and cape,
Disarrayed, all tattered.
*
A former unrivaled,
Dethroned by spurs
And sharp beak-lances,
Of cocky young knights
Dressed in sinew and muscles,
Decked out in glossier clothes...
Who he sparred
For the hand of his favorite queen,
And the charms of his harem of hens.
*
The reign of a sovereign ends;
Bright colors dulled
Dried, bloody, matted.
*
Perhaps foxes will find it,
Or maybe the sun will mummy
It...dry heat
Preserving the shell,
Working like mortician hands.

Come read to me some poem,
Some simple and heartfelt lay,
That shall soothe this restless feeling
And banish the thoughts of day.
Longfellow

Ice
We are all subject to the mortician nature.
Good write, enjoyed.

I've known a rooster or two
in my time,
along with a number of the lesser animals...
beasts...

and with a good eye,
one can learn much of the human nature
for we are not that far removed, after all.

And they think, too!

Well done, Ford.  I thank you for this - it brought back many, many memories...

Ford, an interesting read,  The title of a
dying rooster certainly catches the eye.

I think I know how he felt...Perhaps the
Colonel should come take a few of those
smart ones that think they are Mr. KickButt.

Ford,
Still just as good as when you first
showed it to me Saturday night.

  Hope your headache is gone.
