a thousand premonitions sound in my black flats clacking shrill against the street (safer there, i rationalize) shoulders to the dark, i jump-glide from pool to pool of orange light the shadows stir im per cep tib ly coalesce assume Form and rush me (smooth-headed crows ripping fluidly through the night) i shift aside skittish they we collide they demand and metal the same calm climate of the sable air just grazes my temple thinking through the round hard barrel (a loud fact beside my skin) dulls my movements calming them calming me a flutter of feathers i slip them (hungry, hissing) everything and wheel stripped towards home three blocks: miles in the darkness. |
