Fresh out of the oven, lyrics to another upcoming song on my next album: GAVEL ON GRAVEL Copyright 2004 by: Mark V Sheldon Gavel on gravel No order in the court The sentence has been spoken With no chance to retort Gavel on gravel The proof was overlooked Keep the system moving While innocents are booked Plea-bargains are entered Due to what truth will find Guiltless guilt not guilty Justice must be blind Stories are presented By actors on a stage In front of a live audience Susceptible to rage Controlled manipulation Semantics made to fit Motions hold attention Through careful use of wit Testimonies guided By questions phrased just right And carefully chosen jury Decides without a fight Gavel on gravel No order in the court The sentence has been spoken With no chance to retort Gavel on gravel The proof was overlooked Keep the system moving While innocents are booked Outcomes filibustered Evidence ignored They buy a new Mercedes When their Beemer makes them bored Conscience has no bearing When money is at stake Passing laws are easy When the system’s on the take It really is a small town When friends are in high places A simple little phonecall Will put you in their graces But people still believe That they are truly free Little do they know With closed eyes, you can’t see Gavel on gravel No order in the court The sentence has been spoken With no chance to retort Gavel on gravel The proof was overlooked Keep the system moving While innocents are booked You CAN make a difference, but first you should learn how: http://educate-yourself.org/intro.shtml [This message has been edited by MARK V SHELDON (08-17-2004 06:36 PM).] |

Very good. And unfortunately occasionally true. Sadly, however, the reverse is often the case and the guilty go free. What to do, what to do? Prison is not the answer. Only deep social change will do, and that, I'm afraid, is easier said than done. Enjoyed. Susan Happiness isn't something that happens to you, it's created from within you. Joy is a state of mind. |

Startime55: You are very kind... and humbling... Thank you for your time. Pell: I'm glad this intrigued you -- that's the intent. As for what it will sound like to music, I must admit that I am equally intrigued... Ah, Kacy: You know I relate to you and your outlooks. Sometimes a sledgehammer gets more attention... Hugs to you, my dear. Seymour: Will you be on my Grammy Committee? A wholesome "thank you", Sir. Thank you, Susan. As for "occasionally" true... it seems like this is the norm and it is "occasional truth" is what we experience when we're lucky... I wince to think how many times the guilty go free (hence the "guiltless guilt not guilty" part of the lyrics). The only way that deep change of which you speak can hope to happen is by honest individual change that can serve as an example through the personal living of a "better belief system"... It's got to start somewhere, so why not with one's self? Thanks for sharing. -MVS You CAN make a difference, but first you should learn how: http://educate-yourself.org/intro.shtml |

Thank you, Jo -- you snuck up behind me . The music is still finding its way to me -- I thought I'd let the words inspire the tones (it tends to be easier that way, most of the time...). -MVS You CAN make a difference, but first you should learn how: http://educate-yourself.org/intro.shtml |

Mark -- yes, deep individual change, such as that inspired by the Dalai Lama. A movement towards compassion. And in the giving of compassion and love, hopefully the circle will widen and all will find themselves embraced in the ever elusive arms of happiness. Much happiness to you -- Susan Happiness isn't something that happens to you, it's created from within you. Joy is a state of mind. |

a perfect example of order, which includes truth, honesty... and how it would so create peace, if only...huh? This was outstanding, thank you for writing and sharing. |

Ummm, I hear a dark rumbling beat in the background, probably a little heavy on a plodding drumbeat, keeping all seriousness intent and focused on the words... And I'm going to share it with another poet... or two! |

Susan, yes -- the Dalai Lama is but one fellow who comes to mind who "got it". Compassion is ultimately a pinnacle of human attainment, but it's a long winding staircase, to be sure... Hi LeeJ and thank you for your thoughts. It all starts with the individual... Perhaps with humanity, it's more like "the BILLIONTH monkey" before we "get it" in terms of shifting towards care and love rather than fear and greed, but even though you may not change the world, you can change yourself... Karilea, I'm on the same page as you regarding the dark tone and rhythm -- it's going to be a dark and aggressive album... I'm flattered by your sharing of this piece with others and thank you for the dissemination. Gentle Spirit -- thank you so much. I hope the music finds its way to envelop the mood of the words -- I'm going to experiment with it in the next few days... Thank you, Ed. There are times when one needs to vent in order to purge heavy issues that bear so much weight on one's soul, mind, and heart; this is one of those times... Thanks for stopping by. -MVS You CAN make a difference, but first you should learn how: |
