I saw a shadow on the land
that spread for miles around
no clouds hovered over head
no great edifices were looming
nothing within miles
to cast this ominous shadow.

A witch woman outside the town
told me the shadow was an omen
of destruction soon to come
a war of sorts, but not among men
a battle with the land
sudden ecological breakdown.

I thought the woman mad
for the grass was still green
and the trees and vines still thrived
in the nearby forest
the brook still gurgled
while wild-life abounded all around.

Years passed and the shadow spread
like a stain of hazardous waste
killing all that lay within it’s depths
and the bad times started
food production dipped
and the starving times began.

The news showed those who watched
one continuous picture of
sad, hollow-eyed children
they stared with little life into cameras
that hovered, as if waiting...
watching for the dying to begin.

The scenes we’d once seen on TV
far and distant, as if of another time
and another world, out of our reach,
were now scenes that surrounded us
starvation took our neighbors
the dying times were at our doorstep.

I walked through the streets, trying not to see
the lifeless eyes of the dying
their once outstretched hands
now limp and un-lifted, they had no energy...
for dying - as life seeped from them,
and from me, just as it had from the land.

“How could such a disaster be allowed?”
The outcry - as governments failed.
But few men or women had made a stand
against the constant rape of the land
unlimited abundance -  pure fantasy...
but easier to swallow than reality.

So, the seas died and the land withered
beneath a punishing sun...
the land could no longer provide
for the hordes that once over ran it
and as the population dwindled
no creatures were more pathetic than...poor humanity.

sigh.....This was very well done,as all your poems are...it's really a disgrace what humans have done to this beautiful earth......i figure if nothing happens before then the earth won't hold out for more than 20 years.......that even seems to be pushing it,but the earth is a truely amazing thing,it's taken all mankinds blows and still supports the weight.....and even retains some beauty.....sigh....well done poem!!

I pray that I never see this day...
How terrifying it shall be
