Upon the ground of hallowed walk
a rider stands beside his steed.
In silent reverence his choice
as wounds of courage freely bleed.

His heart, his soul and fortitude
left in droplets of crimson flow.
His life ebbing slowly away
for time is short, he now must know.

Thousands came in liberty’s name
and shed more blood than ever seen.
A revolution’s warring game
On hallowed grounds, peaceful, serene.

They fought for freedom and their lives
on bloodied lands once wild and free.
Until one man standing survives
as shadows walk for liberty.

A generation gave their all
as many fell to cold hard ground.
Killed from leaden hot round ball
as cannons echoed their resound.

And as our flag does feel the breeze
of winds that tell of freedom’s choice
I’ll take one moment on bended knees
to thank these souls in humbled voice.

Ah, Barry -- I am so glad we have reminders like this about the price that was paid for our liberties.  Have you ever seen a movie called, "Revolution?"  I think Al Pacino has the lead role.  A great movie if you haven't seen it -- perfect for the 4th of July.  Your poem reminded me of scenes from the movie.  Much appreciated words!  ....jo

In reverent appreciation of the truth of love-- that others might beneift from their sacrifice.  Fine words of honor.

Hi Barry, this entire poem spoke with sheer signficance, but especially liked...

Thousands came in liberty’s name
and shed more blood than ever seen.
A revolution’s warring game
On hallowed grounds, peaceful, serene.

We just found out that they are going to recall 5,200 more men for Iraq.  My son's only been inactive from the reserves for two years?

I wonder my friend, what causes such wars, in each generation?

Barry,

You know, my brother in arms, that I could not let this one get by without replying.  I had some computer trouble so it took some doing to get back here.  This was such an inspiring piece.  I absorbed every splendid, honorable word you placed.  It is such a fitting tribute to our forefathers.  We are cut from the same thread you and I.  Of course there is no real calling for this genre of poetry, much to my chagrin.  It, like other war inspired poems I have had the privelege of reading, is charged with such historical importance and with such vital imagery that it leaves me speechless.  How disappointing it is to battle such a resistance to this type of writing when it is perhaps one of the most inspiring and important topics to write about.  This speaks to me more than you know.  It's a keeper for sure and worthy of print in the finest of books.  I would have liked to have seen this one carved in some granite shrine somewhere in D.C.  All of my respect and solidarity to you, always.

Your poetic friend,

Kevin
