Everyone's Daddy was written for those Father's through history that have never made it home. My apologies in advance. I'm a Patriot to the bone. I know I write a lot about it. And, if you look at my publishing history there's not a great call for this genre. Or, is there even a genre out there I fit into. I'm just me and I write what I feel like writing regardless of how it's categorized. I hope you appreciate that ideology as much as the poem below. Happy Father's Day to all of the Father's (and single mom's out there in PIP-land). My wife and Kids are visiting her family in Montana. I talked to my kids today. My two year old said, "Happy Father's Day. Love you." That was the first time I've ever heard that from him. I nearly cried, which if you ask my wife, is no small feat. Thus, today was one of the best days of my life. Enjoy... Everyone's Daddy I've been thinking today... I know you told me that I was your favorite boy, and you told me to brush before going to bed. I know you taught me how to pray. I remember how you held my hands together in yours. I know you promised to teach me how to catch and hit the ball out of the park. I know you said you would teach me to shave. Teach me to drive. Teach me how to treat a woman. I remember you said you'd be home for my birthday, then for Christmas, but you never came. I wanted to tell you something else, daddy. It's okay that you never came home. They needed you more than I... much more than I ever did. You're everyone's daddy, now. But, I still have have you here at home in these medals in mom's jewelry box, in these dogtags I wear around my neck, in these boots I have yet to grow into In this flag they gave mom on the mantle. I just wanted to stop and tell you I miss you daddy. I love you daddy. It's okay. I'll be okay. Daddy, just one more thing before I go to brush for you, before I go to pray for you, before I got to bed for you, Happy Father's Day, Daddy Love, your favorite boy. Copyright, Kevin V. This is painfully beautiful Kev, I sit here with a lump in my throat reading this over and over just happy to have seen it. Today (June 21st) my father will be gone for two years and it hasnt been the easiest day for me. I am so glad I found this, you helped express what I feel in my own way and so perfectly. He was only 52 so it seems so much too soon but we can take heart knowing they are somewhere better and cherish the time we did have with them. Maybe this is part of what brought on "Holding on to Hope" from me. Thank you again my friend. Brian Strive for higher levels, if they seem out of reach... Grow, and they will get closer. |

Nice. If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again. |

hey Kevin, next time please post the tissue alert would ya? seriously, this is touching and I do know this feeling so well. I lost my father a few years ago, and he was all my sisters and I had as we grew up. As odd at it seems, I post one of the poems that has been written for him each year at fathers day, and even mothers day. This left me with a lump in my throat, and a tear in my heart. Outstanding. |
